Orthodontic headgear is a very important part of the treatment for some patients. Headgear creates forces that guide the growth of the face and jaws. It’s orthopeadic effect is to modify the growth of the upper jaw. To receive the orthopedic efftect of a headgear it must be consistently worn an accumulated average of 12 to 14 hours a day. A retraction headgear is used for Class II correction (overbite & overjet). It connects to the back of the head or back of the neck. It can influence facial anterior-posterior and vertical growth. It also is used to move teeth into better positions or to prevent teeth from moving by anchoring them. The two most common headgears are:
High Pull Headgear

Cervical Pull Headgear

Your teeth will be tender for the first few days of wearing your headgear. This tenderness will disappear as you adjust to the new pressures.
Let Dr. Gray know if you continue to be uncomfortable for more than a few days. Wearing headgear is necessary for your treatment. Follow the instructions exactly, and you will complete your treatment without any changes in your treatment plan.
